Given the magnitude of such a massive construction and redevelopment project, we have certainly endured a few unexpected challenges. Fortunately, we’ve also been lucky enough to encounter a few unexpected opportunities as well.
Our final “phase 1” construction project scheduled for this spring was our creative arts center. Just two weeks ago, in early April, time was running out to get it started and we had to make a final decision on both the location and design of the building. While our contractors pressed us for an answer, the problem was, nothing felt right.
With the deadline looming, we had an epiphany…the old Somerset horse barn was our answer! By now, the old horse barn was the only original building remaining. Given its location, foundation, and metal roof, it was the only building that had safely survived 30 years of abandonment and harsh Maine winters. Moreover, it’s wide open spaces, high ceilings, barn doors, and second-floor loft offered an idyllic space for campers to find inspiration and allow their creative juices to flow.
With the plan in place, one more great idea was born. Last June, we undertook a systematic removal of many trees from the property, some to allow for construction, others because they were no longer viable or posed a safety risk. While most of the trees were sold, a few were fortunately saved and then locally milled and treated by one of our contractors. As if the stars aligned, our very own Somerset wood has now become the floor for the arts barn.
Thanks to a little procrastination and trusting our gut, a truly remarkable space will be created. We are so excited that this piece of history will live on, and for our campers to be able to connect to Somerset’s rich past. This space once brought joy to thousands of campers. Now, it will again.
