NEW FRIENDS

This past weekend we held our first ever new camper event! But, really, it was our first EVER camper event because every single camper is new to us in 2018! Leading up to the event, I was focused on the organizational side of things…making sure we had hot cocoa and snacks, getting enough glue for the craft project, confirming the ice skating rink, etc. I hadn’t yet thought of any special remarks or introductions, and though I had met many of the girls, I had almost forgotten that most of them would be meeting for the first time.

Soon enough, 18 awesome girls arrived and, while a bit nervous, they were equally excited. In a matter of minutes, they were making projects, ice skating, sharing a laugh, and opening themselves up to some great new friends. It is camp, and camp experiences, that always seem to provide the perfect level of comfort.

For me, personally, this was the first time that I got to really be a Camp Somerset Director. Up to this point, our work has been focused on building the camp, developing the program, and introducing ourselves to new families.It was so magical for me to be able to stand before these Somerset Originals, campers and now family to whom I will forever be connected. I too was nervous about the first meeting, but I left feeling energized and excited for all the opportunities still ahead. Camp is a place where every girl gets to be herself, her very best self. Surrounded by Somerset campers, I was my best self too!
